How this calculator works

For each UK platform we simulate 12 monthly contribution steps per year, applying the portfolio growth (your expected rate minus the fund OCF) compounded monthly. At the end of each year we apply that platform's fee structure — percentage on fund value, capped where applicable, or flat subscription where the platform charges one. This gives an accurate picture of the total cost of ownership over your holding period, not just a headline fee.

The formulas used:

• Trading 212: £0 platform fee, fund OCF only. (Ignoring FX fees — assumes GBP ETFs.)
• Vanguard UK: 0.15% of year-end value, capped at £375/year. Fund OCF additional.
• AJ Bell: 0.25% platform fee. ISA shares capped at £42/year, funds no cap below £250k. Fund OCF additional.
• Hargreaves Lansdown: 0.45% platform fee on funds. ISA shares capped at £45/year. Lower tiers above £250k. Fund OCF additional.
• Freetrade Standard: £71.88/year subscription. Fund OCF additional.
